Opening party & reception on Friday, October 22nd, 4 - 9 PM at Gallery Poulsen, Staldgade 32, Kødbyen

Tine Nedbo is taking over Gallery Poulsen with the exhibition Homecumming for which we will have an opening reception and party on Friday, October 22nd, 4 – 9 PM. The exhibition is going to be Nedbo’s first solo with Gallery Poulsen and is the first in a long line of exhibitions with Scandinavian artists who will debut with solo exhibitions at the gallery in the upcoming months and years.
The exhibition is titled Homecumming as a loving comment to Tine Nedbo’s return to Copenhagen after many years of living abroad. Here she has been met by the old and familiar but has furthermore developed new affiliations in communities whose ideas and systems of value, continually challenge and develop her consciousness and understanding of terms such as sexuality, gender, and race. Just as importantly, the introduction of these ideas, wherever they may have been presented, have brought with them a distinct and growing feeling of a kind of metaphysic home(coming).
Where Nedbo’s earlier works have often centered around the human figure, the six large and brand-new paintings in the exhibition take a new direction. The paintings work as a kind of object-portraits that all apply the still life genre as the form of inquiry. Here a line of personal snapshots from the reassuring and intimate framework of the home is presented. Through the hijacking of this traditional genre, Tine Nedbo’s new series of works challenge the onlookers’ understanding of how we as humans and individuals inhabit physical spaces and which social and political meanings these intimate relationships entail. Much like the historical still life paintings the mute objects are never isolated but adds to their context as a symbolic representation that welcomes political, economic, and bodily perspectives. The silent echoes of power.
For Nedbo the home acts as a well-known and protective holster that, despite this, serves as a space for a body and personality in constant change and development. This means that the portrayed objects form an alphabet of meaning that breaks the boundaries of the private space and points at the exchange of both personal and societal values happening in the communities of opinion that Tine Nedbo exists in. By doing this, Nedbo guides us into a conversation about how we interact with each other at different levels and which structures form the arenas that these meetings take place in.
By sharing her most intimate and safe spaces Tine Nedbo points at the connection between the personal and the mutual. Despite the absence of human figures in the object portraits, the paintings tremble with an echo of human presence and influence. The spaces presented in the paintings open themselves towards the viewer and invite us to coinhabit these vulnerable spheres and their objects and to use this open invitation as a base for reflection and exchange.
We are looking forward to seeing you at the opening party and reception on Friday, October 22nd, 4 – 9 PM!
