Rainer Hosch: "Topanga Beach"

I denne kolde, mørke vintertid findes der intet, som kan dulme vinterens tungsind bedre end Rainer Hosch’ indtagende storformatsfotografier fra den californiske stillehavskyst. Værk for værk fyldes vi med lys og varme i helt uforstyrrede bevægelser, der sætter diskrete aftryk i sandet og i os. Således tager vi hul på et nyt år i Gallery Poulsen, når vi præsenterer soloudstillingen ”Topanga Beach”.
I skæringspunktet mellem Pacific Coast Highway og Topanga Canyon ligger Topanga Beach som en endegyldig grænse, hvor Amerika ender og nye horisonter begynder. Rainer Hosch’ rejse fra Wien til New York og omsider til Los Angeles, har skridt for skridt ført ham tættere på stranden. Gennem mere end to år har han arbejdet på dette helt personlige projekt, der afviger fra hans ellers traditionelle portrætfotografi. I denne storformatsserie fokuserer han på landskabet og horisonten, der dæmrer af sandet, havet og himmelen som en ny forudsætning for en helt anden kunstnerisk retning i hans værkproduktion.
Migrationen fra Østrig til USA har haft skelsættende indflydelse på Rainer Hosch’ fotografiske praksis. I New York var han i udpræget grad optaget af at dokumentere gader og stræder, observere de rå, urbane rum og ikke mindste menneskene, der færdes deri. Det udforskende element i gadefotografiet rodfæstede sig som en solid forankring i hans arbejde med portrætfotografiet. Rainer Hosch’ anden soloudstilling fra 2015 viste en serie af sort-hvid portrætter, eller rettere ’mug shots’ af populære kulturikoner, såsom Nikki Sixx, Iggy Pop, Steve Buscemi og mange andre.
Da Hosch slutteligt ankom til Los Angeles, bosatte han sig med sin familie i Topanga Canyon, langt fra storbyens tætbefolkede urbanitet. Topanga Beach serien begyndte langsomt og tilfældigt at tage form i takt med, at Hosch etablerede et dagligt ritual med at undersøge en uforstyrret følelse af sindighed, når han ankom til stranden. Hans nye værker udforsker et foranderligt landskab alt imens Hosch leger med kompleksiteten af stor- og medium-formatsfilm og medierer den lange rejse mod vest.

In the midst of the cold dark winter, nothing soothes a heavy mind better than Rainer Hosch's engaging, large-format photographs of the Pacific coast. Work by work, we are filled with light and warmth in completely undisturbed movements that discretely make imprints in the sand and in us. Thus, we take on a new year in Gallery Poulsen as we present the solo exhibition "Topanga Beach".
At the intersection of the Pacific Coast Highway and Topanga Canyon lies Topanga Beach as a final frontier, where America ends and a new horizon begins. Rainer Hosch’s journey from Vienna to New York City and finally to Los Angeles has led him incrementally closer to the beach. He has spent the last two years working on this personal project that is a departure from his traditional portraiture. In this large format series, he focuses on the landscape and horizon; that is the sand, ocean, and sky as the subject for a new body of work.
The migration from Austria to the US has informed the evolution of his photographic practice. In New York City, he focused on documenting the streets, observing urban spaces with raw edges and most importantly the people within. The exploration of street photography is rooted in his work as a portraitist. Rainer Hosch’ second solo exhibition from 2015 featured black and white portraits or more accurately mug shots of popular culture icons, such as Nikki Sixx, Iggy Pop and Steve Buscemi.
When Hosch arrived in Los Angeles, he and his family moved to Topanga Canyon, removed from the dense urbanity of the city. The Topanga Beach series slowly started to take form, ideated by accident became a daily ritual studying the fulfillment of arriving at the beach. This new body of work examines a changing landscape while testing the intricacies of Large and Medium format film and meditates on the long journey west.
The exhibition shows 13 large-scale photographs.
