En karismatisk jyde, en håndfuld rasende geniale kunstnere og et skæbnesvangert møde en forårsdag i 2010.
Sådan lød startskuddet til det seneste kapitel i Gallery Poulsens historie – en hæsblæsende fortælling om en lang og begivenhedsrig rejse, der strækker sig helt fra Midtjylland over København til New York.
Med ”The Great Gallery Poulsen "Off to New Location" Show” markerer vi et komma i historien og tager hul på et nyt kapitel i helt nye omgivelser. Efter seks år i den hvide Kødby siger vi farvel til det klinisk hvide kølerum på Flæsketorvet og rykker ind i et brutalt autentisk slagterhus i Staldgade 30A i den brune Kødby, hvor historien driver ned ad væggene!

 

De rå, industrielle omgivelser er med tiden blevet hjemmevante rammer, hvor både vi og kunsten stortrives. Lige netop Kødbyens særprægede DNA er direkte konvertibel til kunstnermiljøet i Brooklyn, hvor nedlagte industrikvarterer for længst er faldet i hænderne på den kreative elite. Derfor var der intet tilfældigt ved den martsdag for seks år siden, hvor Poulsen drog over Atlanten med is i maven og en vilje af stål. Det var tværtimod et skæbnesvangert vendepunkt, der skulle vise sig at have skelsættende betydning.

 

Det herrens år 2010 var på mange måder en vigtig milepæl i Gallery Poulsens foreløbige saga. Galleriet var netop rykket fra det mondæne Frederiksholms Kanal ind til Vesterbros pulserende industriområde. Sammen med flytningen tog vi en beslutning af afgørende betydning: Vi sadlede om, skiftede fokus og rettede blikket mod den internationale kunstscene. Herefter gik jagten ind på at samle et stærkt hold af de absolut mest drevne kunstnere med både kant og knivskarp teknik. Det fandt vi i New York. I et øde industrikvarter i Brooklyn vovede Poulsen sig ind i en forladt fabrik, helt ind i løvens hule. Her lykkedes det at lokke syv hidsige og formidabelt talentfulde kunstnere ud af deres betonbunker, heriblandt Tom Sanford, William Powhida og Aaron Johnson, rive dem over Atlanten og servere deres sydende sprøde værker for danskerne.

 

I 2011 sluttede Debra Hampton, Eric White, Barnaby Whitfield og Alfred Steiner sig til familien Poulsen og snart fulgte også Jade Townsend, Jean-Pierre Roy, Mi Ju og Christian Rex van Minnen. Med et så fuldstændig forrygende godt stjernehold var tiden moden til at indtage de store internationale messer! I 2013 bragede vi kompromisløst ind på Volta i både New York og Basel. Året efter skiftede vi Basel ud med Miami Beach og indledte et samarbejde med Pulse Art Fair i New York og Miami. Senest er vi draget yderligere vestpå til Texas Contemporary, som vi for ganske nylig tog med storm, væbnet med eksplosivt komplekse mesterværker af en sådan kaliber, at det var umuligt at gå forbi uden at dreje hovedet af led og lade sig suge helt ind i vores kunstneres fabelagtige univers af skæv og kynisk skønhed.

 

 

Det har været 13 hæsblæsende år og ambitionskurven er kun gået én vej og det er støt opad, i takt med, at den stærke tiltrækningskraft til USA, der indledningsvist forførte os, nu er blevet til en tæt og frugtbar forbindelse direkte til den globale kunstscene, de store messer og de helt store internationale samlinger, hvor vi er blevet fast inventar. Med vores brutalt smukke nye omgivelser i den brune Kødby vil kunsten nå helt nye højder og vi glæder os til at erobre nye territorier!

 

Med ”The Great Gallery Poulsen "Off to New Location" Show” tager vi afsked med Flæsketorvet med et brag af en udstilling og markerer en fantastisk begivenhedsrig tid ved at vise et væld af vores mest skarpsindige kunstnere gennem tiden. Det bliver en overdådig kombination af vores nyeste stjernefrø i selskab med velkendte mestre, der tager dig med på en spektakulær visuel tidsrejse gennem Gallery Poulsens foreløbige historie. I den anledning giver galleriet indramningen ved køb af værkerne.

One charismatic Dane, a handful of furiously brilliant artists and a fateful encounter on a spring day in 2010.

Thus commenced the latest chapter in the story of Gallery Poulsen - a reckless tale of a long and eventful journey that stretches from the rural Jutland over Copenhagen to New York.
With "The Great Gallery Poulsen "Off to New Location" Show" we mark a comma in the story and embark on a new chapter in brand new surroundings. After six years in the white Meatpacking district of Copenhagen, we say goodbye to the clinically white cold storage space and will soon be moving into a brutally authentic slaughterhouse in Staldgade 30A in the brown meatpacking district, where history is leaking out of the walls!

 

The raw industrial surroundings have become a familiar framework in which both we as well as the arts can really thrive. The meatpacking district’s distinctive DNA is directly convertible to the artistic community in Brooklyn, where disused industrial areas have long ago fallen into the hands of the creative elite. So, there was nothing coincidental about that day in March six years ago, when Poulsen crossed the Atlantic with steady nerves and a rigorous will. It was in fact a fateful turning point that would prove to be of crucial importance.

 

The pivotal year of 2010 was in many ways an important milestone in the preliminary saga of Gallery Poulsen. The gallery had just moved from the proper parts of Frederiksholm Canal into the vibrant industrial area of Vesterbro. Along with the move we made a decision of vital importance: We changed tactics, redirected our focus and turned the spotlight on the international art scene. This initiated a hunt for the utmost driven artists possessing both edge and razor-sharp technique. We found them in New York. In a desolate industrial area in Brooklyn, Poulsen ventured into an abandoned factory, all the way into the lion’s den. He managed to lure seven irascible and formidably talented artists out of their concrete bunker; among them were Tom Sanford, William Powhida and Aaron Johnson; pull them across the Atlantic and serve their sizzling crispy works to the Danes.

 

In 2011 Debra Hampton, Eric White, Barnaby Whitfield and Alfred Steiner joined the Poulsen family and soon after Jade Townsend, Jean-Pierre Roy, Mi Ju and Christian Rex van Minnen followed. With such an exceptionally superb star cast the time was ripe to take on the major international art fairs! In 2013, we uncompromisingly burst through Volta in both New York and Basel. The following year we traded Basel for Miami Beach and initiated a collaboration with Pulse Art Fair in Miami and New York. Most recently, we headed further west for Texas Contemporary, taking them by storm, armed with explosively complex masterpieces of very high caliber, making it impossible to walk by without turning heads and being completely drawn into our fabulous universe of quirky and cynical beauty.

 

 

It has ben 13 action packed years and the ambition curve has done nothing but rise as the strong appeal to the US, initially seducing us, has turned into a close and fruitful connection. With that we have become a permanent fixture in the global art scene, the major art fairs and in important international collections. With our brutally beautiful new space in the brown meatpacking district, the art will reach new heights, and we look forward to conquering new territories!

 

With "The Great Gallery Poulsen "Off to New Location" Show" we say goodbye to the white meatpacking with a boom of an exhibition to mark a fantastic eventful chapter by showing a multitude of our most astute artists over time. It will be a rich combination of our youngest talents in the company of our well-known masters taking you on a spectacular visual journey through the preliminary history of Gallery Poulsen. On this occasion the gallery will provide you the frames when purchasing works.
