Leonardo DiCaprio expands art collection
with new work by Jean-Pierre Roy at VOLTA NY
The annual Armory Week has just opened and New York is buzzing with ambitious and visionary art fairs. Gallery Poulsen is this year at VOLTA NY, showing Jean-Pierre Roy’s new solo exhibition ”Aporetic Sequence”. The exhibition, which displays nine sequential works and one grandiose masterpiece, is already off to a great start before the fair opened the doors to the public yesterday on March 7th.
Leonardo DiCaprio expanded his already extensive art collection and acquired Jean-Pierre Roy’s grand piece ”Landscape with Divergent Perceptual Reference Frames” at the gallery’s preview sale prior to yesterday’s opening of VOLTA NY 2018. As the fair subsequently opened its doors, DiCaprio thus secured the largest piece of our booth, a place in his impressive collection that counts several of the most important contemporary and modern artists, such as Andy Warhol, Takashi Murakami, Salvador Dalí, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Frank Stella and Pablo Picasso.
Being an avid and passionate collector through many years, DiCaprio has developed a notable and razor-sharp eye for both established and upcoming artists, as a well-acquainted visitor of the international art scene. He is often spotted at the most important art fairs, museum openings and major action houses, hereby joining the line of the world’s leading art collectors.
This is not the first time Leonardo DiCaprio buys an artwork by Jean-Pierre Roy. The gallery first sold one of Roy’s post-apocalyptic paintings, “Nachlass” to DiCaprio’s collection back in 2015. His latest purchase ”Landscape with Divergent Perceptual Reference Frames” will be on view at VOLTA NY in Gallery Poulsen’s booth A09 this weekend.
The artwork is part of Jean-Pierre Roy’s latest thematic series of post-apocalyptic iconography in which he seeks to find a new relevance for their focus within our current time. What captivates and drives Roy is an existential curiosity about natural systems, their visual reproduction and our way of navigating in them.
